Amen Part I : Before

Saturday, March 21, 2015 @ 19:30
Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard Street

“Amen” – an incredible journey into the depths of history in a search for those eternal connections between Man and God, and found only in the musical masterpieces of the Great ones!

A pre-Concert lecture opens our program at 7:30pm; the concert starts at 8:00pm

Let us take you on a musical voyage and travel back to the beginning. From the primal “summons from space” (John Tavener) and the “creation of the world” (Olivier Messiaen), to Jewish prayers (“Kaddisch” by Maurice Ravel), then to the lamentations of all Mankind (“Flow My Tears,” the 16th-century original by John Dowland from, performed on authentic instruments, then re-envisaged by Benjamin Britten). From there we will make our final pilgrimage to the most holy places (Brahms-Haydn) and achieve our Apotheosis with the most daring work on our program: “The Fantasia on the theme of Tallis,” by Vaughan Williams (we will hear the original 16th-century theme by Thomas Tallis played on viola da gambas). Hear the echoes from the past meet the present!
